Caring for a Loved One with Dementia: Jean-Luc’s Journey in North Miami

Jean-Luc Belizaire, a 72-year-old North Miami resident, has always been the heart of his family, known for his vibrant storytelling and love for Haitian music. But as dementia began to cloud his memory, his daughter, Isabelle, faced the challenge of keeping him safe and engaged at home. With Home Healthy’s support, Isabelle learned to navigate dementia care, transforming their North Miami home into a haven of comfort and connection. This is Jean-Luc’s story, showcasing practical tips for caregivers and the compassionate care that helped him thrive.

In 2022, Jean-Luc’s forgetfulness became noticeable—he misplaced keys, forgot recipes, and struggled to recognize neighbors. Living in North Miami’s diverse community, with its significant Haitian and Hispanic population (60% Black, 30% Hispanic), Isabelle wanted care that respected her father’s cultural roots. She reached out to Home Healthy, known for its culturally sensitive services, after a recommendation from Jackson North Medical Center. A call to Home Healthy brought our team to their doorstep, ready to support Jean-Luc’s dementia care journey.

Home Healthy’s care began with a thorough assessment by our nurse, Claire, who spoke Creole to connect with Jean-Luc. Claire crafted a personalized plan focusing on safety, cognitive stimulation, and companionship, covered by Jean-Luc’s Medicare plan. Our caregiver, Jean, visited daily, helping with bathing, meal prep, and gentle activities like listening to Jean-Luc’s favorite music. Isabelle learned practical strategies from our team, easing her stress. “They didn’t just care for Dad—they taught me how to care better,” she shared.

Despite progress, challenges arose. Jean-Luc wandered at night, a common dementia symptom, worrying Isabelle. Home Healthy introduced motion-sensor lights and a medical alert pendant, ensuring safety in their North Miami home. Jean also engaged Jean-Luc in memory games, like sorting family photos, which sparked joy and reduced agitation. These moments helped Jean-Luc feel connected, even on tough days. By 2023, Jean-Luc’s routine stabilized, and he began singing along to old songs again, a small victory that lit up the household.

Isabelle faced her own hurdles as a caregiver, balancing work and care. Home Healthy’s respite care gave her breaks, while our team shared tips: create a simple routine, use clear communication, and celebrate small wins. One memorable moment came when Jean-Luc, with Jean’s encouragement, danced at a family gathering, his smile reminding everyone of his vibrant spirit. “Home Healthy brought back pieces of Dad,” Isabelle said, grateful for the support.

Today, Jean-Luc thrives with the ongoing care. Daily visits, remote monitoring, and a tailored plan keep him safe and engaged, while Isabelle feels empowered as a caregiver. Jean-Luc’s story reflects the power of compassionate, culturally aligned care in North Miami, where Home Healthy’s 19 years of service and 97% client satisfaction shine through.
